FirstLight needed their website to better reflect their branding and mission.
Project Goals
To update key pages of the existing Wix website with new content, images, and styling which would better communicate FirstLight’s mission and services.
Challenges
The Wix interface itself comes with both benefits and challenges. It allowed for the FirstLight site to have a very unique look and feel; however, changes did not always save properly and it often took a few attempts to achieve the desired effect. Wix also has limited responsive abilities, so care had to be taken to ensure the layout would still be usable at intermediate screen sizes.
Creative Strategy
The most recent version of the FirstLight logo and the geometric pattern of their primary brand colors utilized in their emails and office signage provided the design inspiration for the site. Through overlays, shapes, and background images, I was able to incorporate bold colors and angles throughout the pages I’d been asked to redesign. I laid out new content in clean yet dynamic ways, and I encouraged the client to use photos from their organization rather than stock photos where possible to give the site a more personal feel. Consistency was important, and I made sure that the fonts and colors matched the logo and branding down to the smallest detail.
Results
FirstLight’s DIrector of Development was thrilled with the changes to the site, which were instrumental in better communication with partners and potential donors. Even more encouragingly, the site saw an increase in inquiries from those seeking help. Having a cleaner site with clear messaging and branding has been beneficial to all who visit the site, as well as to the organization as a whole.
My Role
I was responsible for the design elements of the site. I searched for stock photos, created background images and overlays, and worked to ensure that text and stylistic elements remained consistent. The excellent work done on the messaging for the site—both internally at FirstLight and through the collaborative efforts of a communications team I participated in—resulted in clear and concise information. I then worked to determine the best possible way to lay out and present each section. I also trained one of FirstLight’s administrators on how to make edits to the site.
