Mouse D-Fence Product Website
2024-08-15Project Description
After a website audit, Hiram House Camp needed help making the recommended changes.
Project Goals
While Hiram House Camp had a vibrant, dynamic design on some pages, others were lacking this. It was important to implement that “fun” branding in key areas of the site. Some of the “fun” colors, however, did not have enough contrast to meet web accessibility standards, so the legibility needed to be improved. The main navigation was also difficult to see and use, so an entirely new header had to be created.
Challenges
A lack of attention to detail in some of the original design and functionality, in addition to edits to the site by numerous individuals over the years, contributed to numerous small issues which required patience and a careful eye to correct.
Creative Strategy
The homepage provided the best expression of Hiram House Camp’s branding, so I started by fixing the contrast and typography issues there. I created a color palette to standardize the colors on the site and edited the background images so that the text over them would meet accessibility contrast recommendations. Once the homepage edits were complete, I pulled that same look and feel into the other pages the client requested. I also completely replaced the old header with one that followed modern conventions and utilized a mega menu with photographs for ease of use and visual interest. I cleaned up the appearance and functionality of the footer as well. Several image and text sliders required attention to improve their appearance and make them easier for users to interact with, and the activities icons needed to be larger and clearer, so I made changes to the code of the site to address those issues.
Results
Working with Mary on our website updates and redesign was a pleasure. She updated all the areas we needed and created a new visual look of our site, which needed a refresh. She also helped with an emergency back-end issue that needed to be resolved ASAP. We would highly recommend Mary.
– Hiram House Camp
The updated pages were just what the client was looking for! The new header has improved the appearance and usability of the site immensely, and main pages needed for camper registration now meet accessibility contrast guidelines and have a more consistent look and feel. Plus, these changes were completed in time for a new season of camp registrations.
My Role
I reviewed the changes recommended in the web audit and helped the client to prioritize based on their needs and budget. I made numerous changes to the content and layout, as well as to the code of the site to fine-tune the details of the site’s appearance and functionality. All the colors I used were checked for accessibility contrast. I also took care to test the changes across multiple web browsers and screen sizes.
*Note that the client has made edits to the site since these changes.
